Overview

## Ridge Tile Repairs for Hartlepool Homes

The ridge is the line of tiles running along the very top of your roof, where the two slopes meet. It takes the full force of the wind and weather, and on many older roofs the ridge tiles are held in place with nothing more than mortar. Over time that mortar cracks and washes out, the tiles loosen, and water starts to get in along the top of the roof.

In Hartlepool, with strong winds coming off the North Sea, loose ridge tiles are one of the most common roof faults we see. Left alone, they can slip, crack or blow off completely, which is both a leak risk and a safety risk for anyone below.

East View Roofing replaces, rebeds and re-secures ridge tiles across Hartlepool and the surrounding area. Every job starts with a free inspection and a clear written quote.

What happens if it's left

## Ridge Problems We Fix
These are the signs that your ridge needs attention.

### Cracked or missing mortar
Gaps in the mortar under and between ridge tiles let water and wind in.

### Loose or rocking ridge tiles
Tiles that move in the wind are no longer properly bedded and can come off.

### Cracked or broken ridge tiles
Frost and impact can crack ridge tiles, letting water straight through.

### Missing ridge tiles after storms
High winds can lift ridge tiles off completely, leaving the top of the roof open.

### Damp along the top of the loft
Water staining near the top of the rafters often points to a ridge fault.

### Ridge repair mistakes to avoid

- Smearing new mortar over the old cracked bedding instead of rebedding properly.
- Fitting mismatched ridge tiles that don't sit correctly on the roof.
- Ignoring the hips and verges, which often have the same mortar problems.
- Climbing up to check the ridge yourself.

In detail

## Mortar Ridge or Dry Ridge?
There are two main ways to fix ridge tiles, and both have their place.

### Traditional mortar bedding
Mortar-bedded ridges have been used for generations and can look very neat. When we rebed a ridge, we remove the old crumbling mortar and lay fresh bedding so the tiles sit firmly and evenly.

Mortar does still age, and on exposed roofs it is affected by frost and weather over the years. That is worth bearing in mind when choosing between the two methods.

### Dry ridge systems
A dry ridge system fixes each ridge tile mechanically to the roof, rather than relying on mortar alone. It can be a sensible upgrade where mortar ridges keep failing. See our dry ridge and dry verge page for more on how it works.

### Cost and payment
Ridge repairs start from £150, which is our minimum charge. The final price depends on the length of the ridge, the number of tiles involved and access. You will have a written quote before any work starts.

### Why ridges fail on Hartlepool roofs
Hartlepool's coastal position means roofs here take a lot of wind and salty, damp air. The ridge is the most exposed part of any roof, so it is often the first place to show wear. Freeze and thaw cycles in winter open up small cracks in the mortar, rain washes the loosened mortar out, and eventually the ridge tiles lose their grip.

Hips and verges are usually bedded the same way, so when we inspect a ridge we check these too. Dealing with them at the same time can save you a second visit and a second set of access costs later.

### Keeping your ridge in good order
Once your ridge has been rebedded or fitted with a dry ridge system, it needs very little attention. It is still worth glancing at the roof after big storms and booking a free inspection if anything looks out of place. Small faults dealt with early keep the cost down and stop water getting into the loft.

### Signs you can spot from the ground
You don't need to climb up to spot many ridge problems. Look for gaps under the ridge tiles, pieces of mortar in the gutters or on the ground, ridge tiles that look out of line, or a tile that appears to have moved after a windy night. Inside, damp near the top of the loft is another clue. If you notice any of these, a free inspection will tell you what is going on.
